EDITOR'S CORNER: Ukraine's Second Invasion Anniversary

Unfortunately, just over a week ago, Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny tragically died in prison. The circumstances of his death remain a mystery. Today is a particularly poignant day as it marks the second anniversary of the full-scale, illegal invasion of Ukraine by the terrorist state, Russia.

In this blog post, I would like to delve into the events of the war that have unfolded over the past two years, placing special emphasis on the atrocities attributed to the Russian army. We will also examine several prominent figures who lost their lives and the circumstances surrounding their deaths. Finally, let's explore why the West is losing interest in supporting Ukraine, despite the escalating discussions of a potential confrontation between NATO and Russia in the next few years.

TWO YEARS OF BLOOD, SWEAT AND TEARS IN UKRAINE

Over the past two years, Ukraine has displayed remarkable bravery in its struggle for freedom, defending both its people and its territory. The Ukrainian population has faced unparalleled hardships, rivalling those experienced by any European country since the Second World War. The relentless actions of the Russians have exacerbated the situation.

Although the majority of the conflicts have been concentrated in the East of the country, the South and West have also been indiscriminately subjected to shelling and bombing, including various missile and drone attacks. In Kyiv, residents recount the harrowing experience of bombs falling in the dead of night, robbing them of peaceful sleep for all this time. The impact is particularly harsh on children, who can't attend school without the constant fear that their classes might be evacuated due to bombings. There have been accounts when they are on a school trip, only to witness a building crumbling before their eyes, destroyed by a missile attack.

Russia exhibits a blatant disregard for the lives and well-being of Ukrainians, showcasing a callous indifference to the human suffering it inflicts. It is paradoxical how, on one hand, Russians often characterize Ukrainians as their brethren; yet, on the other hand, they demonstrate no hesitation in invading Ukraine, ruthlessly taking the lives of civilians, and inflicting unimaginable harm upon the population and infrastructure. This stark contradiction raises questions about the sincerity of the purported fraternal ties, as actions speak louder than words.

The invasion not only impacts lives but also leaves a trail of destruction, affecting the very fabric of Ukrainian society. The disregard for human life, coupled with the wanton destruction of infrastructure, paints a grim picture of the consequences of Russia's actions. The international community must not only condemn these atrocities but also take decisive steps to hold Russia accountable for its actions and work towards a resolution that ensures the safety and sovereignty of Ukraine.

One cannot discuss the Russian invasion of Ukraine without addressing places like Bucha, where the Russian army mercilessly killed, assaulted, and beat civilians. The atrocities uncovered in that city brought tears to the eyes of reporters, investigators, and every Western dignitary who witnessed them. The indiscriminate massacres of civilians flagrantly violated every principle of international law. The deliberate targeting of innocent victims is not only a violation of basic human rights but also a blatant affront to the norms of decency and humanity. The international community must not turn a blind eye to these atrocities but must instead demand accountability and justice for the victims and their families.

We also need to address the alarming issue of the abduction of Ukrainian children. These vulnerable youngsters frequently face the horrifying fate of being forcibly transported to Russia, where they are placed in orphanages or subjected to indoctrination in what can be referred to as brainwashing schools. Subsequently, they are adopted out to Russian families. Shockingly, Russia not only denies the abductions but also goes to great lengths to conceal the mass kidnappings and evacuations. The plight of these abducted children represents a distressing aspect of the conflict, underscoring the extent to which innocent lives are being upended. The denial and concealment by Russia add another layer of injustice to an already dire situation, perpetuating a cycle of suffering for the affected families.

Another grim facet of the Russian invasion is the widespread occurrence of mass incarcerations and forced disappearances. In the occupied regions, the Russian army has established various filtration camps, imposing a mandatory passage through these facilities to obtain a special permission slip allowing residence in the occupied areas. The possession of this filtration camp pass or a coercively obtained Russian passport becomes crucial, as citizens risk being denied essential provisions like food, water, and medical attention without them.

The severity of experiences within filtration camps spans from undergoing interrogations, enduring physical beatings, and enduring deplorable living conditions to the extreme of disappearance and, tragically, death in certain instances. The plight of individuals caught in this web of oppression underscores the harsh and inhumane consequences of the Russian invasion.

Although not widely reported in the media, it is a well-known fact that a basic "tool" that the Russian army uses in almost every conflict since the Soviet times (and before) to the current Ukrainian war is sexual assault of women, children, and sometimes captured POWs. Along with horrific sexual assaults, there can also be beatings, torture, and executions. There have been cases documented where they assaulted young gay men for having some "sexually suggestive" pictures on their phones. Or, of women being forced to watch their children being raped by these Russian soldiers. There is no comfortable way to say this because this is shocking behavior that nobody should be subjected to or endure.

I have just highlighted some well-documented events that we, in the West, can easily read about in the media, such as newspapers or online sources like X. However, when you piece together these events, it paints a very clear and horrific picture. It becomes evident that no Ukrainians should have to live under Russian-occupied territory or with these invaders at their doorstep. The collective narrative reveals the severe hardships and atrocities faced by those unfortunate enough to be in the grip of the occupying forces.

This devastating reality underscores the widespread and enduring trauma faced by the Ukrainian people. The continuous threat of violence not only disrupts their daily lives but also leaves an indelible mark on the collective psyche of the nation. It's crucial for the international community to recognize the severity of the situation and work towards a lasting resolution to end the suffering and restore peace in Ukraine.

THE INTELLIGENTSIA GOES FIRST

We previously delved into the tragic Katyn massacre, where the Polish intelligentsia fell victim to mass executions in Soviet Russia. Unfortunately, a parallel atrocity is unfolding in Ukraine. There are many examples of smart, educated people dying from missile attacks, or injured on front lines.

The heartbreaking demise of acclaimed author Victoria Amelina was particularly sad for the international community. She met her untimely end during a Russian attack on Kramatorsk, a city where she was enjoying a meal with friends. The restaurant they were in bore the brunt of a Russian Iskander missile, initially leaving Amelina injured on June 27, 2023. Tragically, she succumbed to her injuries just three days later, on July 1.

Amelina, a distinguished writer, had authored two novels and a children's book. Her achievements included winning the Joseph Conrad Literary Award and earning finalist status for the European Union Prize for Literature. Before her tragic demise, she had secured a residency in Paris designed for displaced Ukrainian writers, a one-year opportunity she intended to use to complete her latest work, "Looking at Women Looking at War" – a poignant "diary of about a dozen women... pursuing justice."

In a somber start to 2024, on January 7, Maksym Oleksandrovych Kryvtsov, a renowned poet, lost his life in the war. His collection, "Poems from the Loophole," had garnered acclaim as one of the best Ukrainian books of 2023.

Lesia Lytvynova, a prominent volunteer and charity founder, lamented Kryvtsov's passing, emphasizing his brilliance as a poet and the profound impact of his loss on literature and the human experience.

Ukraine is currently grappling with a severe brain drain, exacerbated by refugees seeking sanctuary in other countries and the educated population finding themselves on the front lines, risking injury or death. The war's toll extends to the economy, hampering normal work routines, and hindering innovation and development as individuals with the potential to drive progress are redirected to the demands of the conflict.

WHY IS THE WEST LOSING INTEREST

Unfortunately, the constant state of conflict worldwide has driven prices higher, leading to massive inflation in many countries, and a collapse in the standard of living. In 2024, we are witnessing the largest election year in modern history. Consequently, politicians find themselves compelled to cater to the wishes of their constituents. The average citizen is increasingly concerned about the rising cost of living, diminished healthcare, global warming, and various local issues. For many, the war in Ukraine seems distant and devoid of personal benefits after such a prolonged duration.

Regrettably, this mindset is problematic. While it's true that inflation has surged, impacting individuals' personal economies, the situation could deteriorate significantly if Russia gains ground in Ukraine and sets its sights on other European countries.

Politicians and key defense personnel are, for the most part, taking steps to draw attention to the potential spillover and escalation of the situation. However, they adopt subtle approaches, mindful of not wanting to alarm the general population. Therefore, it would be beneficial for government officials to enhance efforts in spotlighting the realities of war and illustrating the potential consequences if Russia were to invade.

WHAT CAN YOU DO TO HELP?

You can contribute to a Ukrainian charity supporting efforts on the front line. If military support isn't your preference, there are numerous charities aiding civilians. United24 is a commendable starting point; it allows easy donations with the option to specify your preferred area of support.

Spread awareness about the events in Ukraine on platforms like X, Facebook, or any other social media site to ensure the war remains prominently featured in the media.

Contact your local Member of Parliament to convey your desire for them to endorse governmental bills or aid directed towards Ukraine. Express your concerns if they are not actively supporting Ukraine.

Consider participating in a protest or march in your area, provided it is safe and lawful, to demonstrate solidarity in ending the war. The more voices raised, the more impactful our collective message will be.

CONCLUSION

In conclusion, the war in Ukraine has persisted for an extended period, and indications suggest its continuation. It is in the interest of Europe and NATO that Ukraine emerges victorious, as the alternative could result in devastating consequences. The responsibility lies with all of us to support Ukraine and convey to our Members of Parliament (MPs) our expectation for them to stand behind Ukraine. Additionally, using your vote to elect candidates who advocate for peace in Europe and a stronger, united stance against Russian aggression is of paramount importance.
